Book 3 in the Wodehouse Cozy Mystery Series
As predicted by Great aunt Dorothea (deceased), Rosie Wodehouse had a knock on the door. An unusual request arrives via courier. The package contains a letter from a woman who believes someone is out to kill her. She is a recluse and not quite the full shilling. In some way she is also connected to Dorothea’s past as Rosie is about to find out…
‘The stepsisters were sitting cross-legged on Rosie’s sofa and Bumble was stretched out along the back, her right front paw dangling down in her peaceful sleep. Bear was crashed out on the floor with a full tummy.
Anna took another tuna and cucumber sandwich from the plate of food they were sharing. Rosie sipped at the frothy cappuccino; after lunch, they intended to get stuck into what they had so far. In her usual style, Dorothea wasn’t going to give too much away. A thud on the coffee table made them jump. A small cardboard box landed in front of them. Rosie reached out and took the lid off, it was full of photos. Just then there was a light tapping on the front window.
“It’s James!” Rosie jumped up to let him in. He was peeking through the blind and could see the animals sleeping.
“Darling! How are you? You look divine!” He flounced through the front door and into the apartment.
“Anna, how marvellous. I’m glad I caught you both at home. Dorothea thinks I might be able to help you with something. Oh, you have a rake of cakes, may I?”
“How’s our favourite psychic millionaire?” Rosie teased. “Are you settling into your new home okay?”
“Let me tell you dearie, Bromington Heights, is without any doubt, the best thing I ever purchased. The tenants are moving out shortly and I have enormous plans for my belated housewarming. You do know Dorothea visits me there?”
“I didn’t, no. But I thought I heard her talking to me earlier when we went to…”
“Bromington Beach. Yes, she’s told me all about it.”
“Would you like coffee, James?” Anna offered.
“How sweet. Just two sugar lumps darling. I’m minding my figure.”
“So she isn’t grounded to this house then, that’s for sure,” Rosie smiled.
“For a spirit, she has come along leaps and bounds. She appears to be gathering the energy levels she had in her prime, as a young woman. She tells me you are working on something and you must take her old friend at her word.”
“Let me show you what it’s all about.” Rosie retrieved the letter, the cheque was folded inside and it caused James to smirk too.
“Dorothea tells me she owes her and I think this amount reflects that. After all these years, Prudence has not forgotten that much at least.” James snorted with laughter at only he knew what.’
